  Veterans Day 2009
-----------------------------

------------------------------------------

On Veterans Day

The story of the Declaration of Independence is one of the most cherished and significant chapters in the history of America.  The document is a remarkable statement of revolutionary ideas and ideals that had never before been featured on so prominent a stage.  We learned as schoolchildren the courage and character required of the signers of that document:  they mutually pledged their sacred honor and their lives to its ideals. Those few dozen men rightly occupy a place in our pantheon of heroes.

Somewhere in this great land today, young men and women are signing up to serve in the armed forces.  These men and women, whether they realize it or not, are only the latest among millions of Americans through the centuries who have pledged their sacred honor and their lives to the defense of their country.  This pledge, an echo and a reminder of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was made before them by the veterans of the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, World War II, and every other era of war and peace since the founding of the country.

These veterans, whether career military or citizen-soldiers who served and then returned to civilian life, faced the ultimate sacrifice.  On Veterans Day we remember and honor all who have served.  Each one of them made the pledge;  some were called to honor it with their lives, others paid with pain and injuries, many came safely through.  All were changed by the experience.

America recognizes its veterans on this day.  A quiet moment of reflection is appropriate—but each of us should break that silence by speaking our thanks to the veterans we know, for their service and sacrifice.

Feed the Children

came to Louisville a couple of weeks ago, a semi loaded with 1200 boxes of food, hygiene products, and gift items arrived at the First Christian Church , DOC in Louisville. the semi was sponored by Harold and rita Sporrer of Manning Iowa and was a gift to the Cass County Clergy Association to distribute to people in need in and around Cass County.

 childrenfeeders.jpg
This arrived at a perfect time of need for many who have been or are being laid off of their places of employment. Harold Sporrer stated that it was not his money, but the Lord's. He has been a supporter of this effort in the past. We had many helpers in the form of deliverers, cooks, unloaders and those who prayed for the needs of our clients.

Our prayer is that we will be able to bring hope to those in troubled times

 Nebraska Parks Bulletin

2010 Nebraska Hunting/Fishing Permit Fees

2010 will be bringing about some significant changes to permitting.  All of the common hunt/fish type permits will be issued through the electronic system, even at external vendor locations. Some permit fee changes in summary:

The Habitat Stamp for 2010 will be $20.00 (a $4.00 increase). This also means the Lifetime Habitat Stamp will go from $320 to $400 January 1, 2010.

The Aquatic Habitat Stamp for 2010 will be $10.00 (a 2.50 increase)….note this adds to the cost of Fishing permits (except the 1-day).  So while no increase to the Fishing permit fees were made, their costs will increase due to the increase in the incorporated Aquatic Habitat Stamp.

Nonresident Paddlefish Permits will increase $20 to the 2010 rate of $40.00

A Nonresident Combination Hunt and Fish permit was created for a fee of $120.00  (add the required $10.00 aquatic stamp and necessary $20.00 habitat stamp and the cost will be $150 plus the issue fee ($1.00 from NPC or $2.00 from external agent).

Resident Lifetime Furharvest permits were established with similar cost and age breaks as the resident lifetime hunt permit.

Perhaps one of the more dramatic and unprecedented moves was the creation of youth deer, antelope and turkey permits at record low price of $5.00.  This price is for either resident or nonresident participants age 15 and below.  The goal is to increase interest and participation by young hunters.

Changes involving nonrefundable application fees for our new ‘lottery’ type permit offerings.  These new offerings that will become available next year, might include such things as a ‘statewide’ elk permit or a multispecies permit that would allow the harvest of a deer, 2 turkeys, an antelope and perhaps in some cases an elk.  The actual offerings will be determined in wildlife regulations.  These permits would be offered in a similar fashion as the Bighorn Sheep permit, where an individual can apply and be put in a drawing.

Otoe County Genealogical Society

The Otoe County Genealogical Society will hold its November 12th meeting at the Morton-James Public Library. This meeting will welcome all new members into the society, and will also cover topics of interest concerning genealogical research in the Otoe County area. This meeting is open to all who are interested in joining the society, or just wish to attend to learn more about genealogical research in general.

During this meeting we will be conducting our quarterly Genealogy Internet Workshop, where we will be introducing our members to the valuable genealogical resources that are available on the Internet. This workshop is designed to assist those researchers who are unsure of how to locate their family's history online. So if you are new to the Internet and would like assistance in this area, please stop by and join us in our free workshop. Also, for those visitors that prefer to research their ancestors through more conventional means, the library's Genealogical Reference Room will be open at this time, and assistance will be provided by society members in this area as well.

Our society meets on the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm, and our meeting location alternates every other month between the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse, and the Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City. To learn more about the society, please check out our website, or contact the Morton-James Public Library for more information.
