John's conclusions on the Spam
Problem:
This past year the most frequent question I get
from folks in this area is:
Can You Do SOMETHING about all this spam!!! It is in everybody's interest to find a complete and perfect solution, but it is a technical and political nightmare and I don't have to tell you it is getting worse every day. If you can imagine it getting 10 times worse, that is what we have to look forward to this time next year. Politicians are going to create laws, but it is kinda like creating laws against ants at picnics. All the kings horses and all the kings men are NOT going to rid the world of ants. There are an infinite supply of ants and most live in anthills in far away countries that don't care about our laws and morals. The Spam Arrest fix has a one-time inconvenience, that is pretty acceptable followed by a complete end to machine-generated automated junk email. The really nasty stuff that is getting worse and worse is all automatically generated. The Spam Arrest thing insures that every email you receive was sent by a person with an identifiable return address. This doesn't prevent the local insurance agent from trying to sell you life insurance, but it absolutely kills off anonymous machine generated spam which is the stuff you absolutely do not want your kid getting on your home PC. They charge about $3.50 a month to participate, which is not perfect, I would prefer free, but it is a cure that is real. So, in this imperfect world of ours, this is a nearly perfect solution to get us back to some sanity. They have a cute animated cartoon clip that explains more.
